Behavior Change for a Sustainable World

SUBMISSIONS FOR 2020 being accepted! 

The purpose of the Sustainability Award is to support a HABA member in fostering an environment that promotes sustainable practices in Hawai'i. Applicants to be considered will plan to carry out activities designed to support or educate the community in living sustainably. 

Submissions will be considered that: 

❖Include a short essay on how the project supports sustainability through behavior analytic practices. 

❖ Include objectives. 

❖ Include methods/procedures. 

❖ Specify how the award will be used. 

Please email submissions to Sally McKeever at [email protected] Submissions will be accepted until December 31st, 2020. Winners of the 2020 Sustainability Award will present their research at the 17th Annual HABA Convention in 2021!

Applicants planning to carry out research with human participants must follow the appropriately required steps to gain review and approval through the Institutional Review Board (IRB) process. Applicants planning to conduct human subjects research warranting an IRB application must provide letter(s) of support from relevant community partners with their award application. Studies limited to the inclusion of de-identified data that is publicly available (e.g., literature synthesis; reporting the number of restaurants that reuse utensils; types of waste found on a beach) does not require IRB review.

A Behavioral Economics Study on the Valuing of Polystyrene Alternative Food Containers

Anne, Sara, Kelly and Hannah will be conducting a study to replacing the use of "Styrofoam" or polystyrene for take-home containers replaced by compostable containers. They will be presenting their data at #HABA2019.

Naomi's behavior change for a sustainable world  proposal is for people to discontinue the use of sunscreens made with oxybenzone, which is  damaging our reefs, and to make a switch to an  alternative sunscreen that keeps our oceans clean  and our animals safe.Naomi will present her research at #HABA2018.
